adversity is adversity only if you cannot look at yourself at your lowest and most vulnerable and laugh. i learnt early to laugh at myself, because going back to africa for vacations as a mixed-race kid was a harrowing experience for me. being teased and mocked in colors i didn’t even know existed – my peroxide hair, my yellow skin, my red lips, my white voice. well, here’s a color rhyme for all of you who didn’t teach me the right things about colors: 

see – a white man

do you know the color of paper

see – a red man

do you know the color of blood

see – a yellow man

do you know the color of your sun

see – a black man

who turned off the light.
